Sherborne Abbey - a cathedral until the Norman conquest, and a parish church since the reformation - is famed for its extensive fan vaults.
That in the nave was built by William Smyth from Wells, while the quire vault (pink due to a fire in 1437) was built by an architect connected to St. Mary Redcliffe, possibly
Robert Hulle, who worked at Winchester College. |

Sherborne (New) Castle was built by Sir Walter Raleigh, next to the old castle. Raleigh famously introduced tobacco
to England in the 1580s. By the time of King James it was already recognised as deleterious to health. |
