Auxerre has the most striking panorama of gothic structures visible from the river.

The abbey in Auxerre contains the tomb of St. Germanus (St. Germain), a bishop who fought against heresy in St. Albans, and died in Ravenna. The church and village of St. Germans in Cornwall is named after him, as is a church in Paris.
