Three years in the making, this is my selection of the best of Manchester.

The city turned out to be concealing much more than I had imagined. It grew from little more than a village near Salford into the industrial centre of Britain, challenging (and arguably beating) Birmingham as the second city of England. As a result, many of the buildings in the city are Victorian. The Second World War and the bomb of 1996 caused considerable damage, but the city is now experiencing new growth. Glass monoliths are appearing on every street corner. I recommend Central Library for anyone who is interested in the history of the city.
