Amiens, on the Somme, is chiefly known for its wonderful cathedral. Being full of canals, Ruskin called Amiens the Venice of France.

Amiens Cathedral is the greatest complete achievement of French gothic - the "Parthenon of French architecture" in Viollet Le Duc's words. It has the second highest vault in France, after the incomplete work at Beauvais. Construction began under Robert De Luzarches after the purported head of John The Baptist was brought to Amiens after the Crusades. |
