Compiègne is a small town north of Paris.

At the edge of the forest of Compiègne, where the 1918 armistice was signed, the village of Pierrefonds can be found. The beautiful château, restored by Viollet-Le-Duc, is often quoted as the perfect romantic form of medieval castle.
